Key takeaways

  • The new Paw ID tag puts your name, address and phone number on the front, and a large QR code with NFC on the back.
  • Paw ID tags are no longer just QR: a finder can simply tap their phone on the tag to open your pet's profile.
  • UK law requires dogs in public to wear their owner's name and address, so the new tag does the job of an engraved tag and a QR tag in one.
  • Existing Paw ID tags keep working exactly as they do today.

Many Paw ID owners use their QR tag alongside a traditional engraved tag: one for instant scan alerts and a full pet profile, the other for their name and address. So we're making one tag that does both.

Our new personalised Paw ID tag puts your contact details on the front and a large QR code with NFC on the back. One tag, everything a finder needs, and the details UK law asks dogs to wear in public.

The tag shown above is an illustration. The final design may vary slightly.

What's new

  • Your details on the front. Your name, address and phone number, printed clearly and large enough to read at a glance.
  • A bigger QR code on the back. Easier and quicker to scan, even on an older phone.
  • New: NFC built in. Paw ID tags are no longer just QR. A finder can simply tap their phone on the tag to open your pet's profile, with no camera or scanning needed.
  • Your choice of colour. Pick from five Paw ID colours, or choose any colour you like.
  • Everything you already know from Paw ID. The same profile, instant scan alerts and emergency contacts, with a one-off payment and no additional monthly fees.

Not just QR any more: tap your phone with NFC

Scanning a QR code is quick when everything goes to plan. But it isn't always easy when you've just found a lost dog. They might be wriggling, scared or not keen on strangers. It might be dark or raining, the tag might be scratched or muddy, or the finder might not know how to scan a QR code at all.

That's why the new tag also has an NFC chip built in. NFC (near-field communication) is the same technology you use when you tap your phone or card to pay.

How it works

  1. Tap. The finder holds the top of their phone against the tag for a second.
  2. Open. A notification pops up, and one tap opens your pet's Paw ID profile in their web browser.
  3. Reunite. They see your pet's details, can message you or call your emergency contacts, and can share their location. You get an instant alert, just like with a QR scan.

No camera, no focusing and no app to download. And because the QR code is still on the back, anyone whose phone doesn't support NFC can scan it just as they do today.

Which phones can tap the tag?

  • iPhone: iPhone XS and newer read NFC tags automatically, with nothing to switch on.
  • Android: most modern Android phones support NFC. On some, it needs to be switched on in settings, and it's usually already on if the phone is used for contactless payments.

What does UK law say a dog tag must show?

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, any dog on a road or in a public place in England, Scotland and Wales must wear a collar with the owner's name and address on the collar itself or on a tag attached to it. Including your postcode makes your address complete. Owners who don't comply can be fined. A few working dogs are exempt, such as dogs used for herding, sport or by the emergency services, and guide dogs.

A phone number isn't a legal requirement, but it's strongly recommended. It's the quickest way for someone who finds your dog to reach you.

A microchip is a separate requirement and doesn't replace a collar tag. Dogs in the UK must be microchipped, and since June 2024 so must cats in England. But a microchip can only be read by a vet, rescue centre or warden with a scanner. A tag can be read by anyone.

You can read more in our guide to UK dog ID tag rules.

Already have a Paw ID tag?

Your current tag keeps working exactly as it does today, so nothing changes. Your profile, scan alerts and emergency contacts all stay the same. When the new tag launches, you'll be able to link it to your existing pet profile, and keep your current tag as a spare.

We've already emailed existing customers with an exclusive offer. If you haven't seen it, check your inbox (and spam folder) for an email from Paw ID.

Frequently asked questions

What can I put on the front of the new tag?

Your name, your address with postcode, and a phone number. Each line has a character limit so everything stays easy to read, and we'll show you a preview before your tag is made.

Do I still need a separate engraved tag?

No, as long as you put your name and address on the front. The new tag then does the job of an engraved ID tag and a QR tag in one.

How does the NFC tap work?

The finder holds the top of their phone against the tag. A notification pops up, and one tap opens your pet's Paw ID profile in their browser. There's no camera, scanning or app needed.

What if the finder's phone doesn't have NFC?

They can scan the QR code on the back instead. Every new tag has both, so any smartphone can open your pet's profile.

Does the NFC chip need a battery or charging?

No. The chip is powered by the phone that taps it, so there is no battery to charge or replace.

Does the person who finds my pet need an app?

No. They scan the QR code with their phone camera, or tap the tag with an NFC-enabled phone, and your pet's profile opens in their web browser.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. Like all Paw ID tags, it's a one-off payment with no additional monthly fees.

I already have a Paw ID tag. What happens to it?

Nothing changes. Your current tag keeps working, and when the new tag launches you'll be able to link it to your existing pet profile and keep your current tag as a spare.

Can I use the new tag for my cat?

The law on owner details applies to dogs, but the tag works the same way for any pet.
