What You Need to Know About the UK Dog Tag Law

What do you know about the UK dog tag law?

Losing your four-legged friend can be just as hard as trying to find them, which is why PAWID is on a mission to protect your pets with our revolutionary, scannable smart tag. It’s also worthy to know that the government recognises the importance of our pets, and how UK legislation works towards protecting them too.

Today we are going to be exploring these laws in detail, so you can find out more about how to protect your pets, and how PAWID can play a key role in that scenario!

What is the law?

In the UK, there are two legislations in place that protect the safety of dogs. The first is The Control of Dogs Order 1992, which states that “every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it”. Breach of this law can lead to a fine of up to £2000, and any dog found without identification can be seized and treated as a ‘stray dog’.

The second, more recent legislation is The Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015, which states that dogs over 8 weeks old must be microchipped. Prior to this legislation, it was only highly recommended that dogs were microchipped. Now owners could face a fine of up to £500 if they do not microchip their dog.

What information does a dog tag require?

A dog tag should contain the owner’s name and address, and their contact information. As it is a legal requirement, many owners like to include ‘chipped’ on their tag as well. Some owners also like to include medical information, but with traditional pet tags and engraving, this can begin to take up a lot of space.

This is where PAWID comes in!

What is PAWID’s role in protecting your pup?

Our scannable smart tag allows people who have found your lost pet access important information, such as contact details or allergy information. You can include as little or as much as possible on your pet profile, with all data stored on our servers being fully encrypted and secure. You can also set any of your information to be private so it is not accessible to anyone!

We are on the mission to protect pets and help you have peace of mind. PAWID has already helped thousands of pets to find their way back to their loving home!
